It is still fricking snowing. I love snow. Really I do. But I can’t remember the last time there was a day with no snow or sleet. Still, I’m thinking the snow blower we bought last week has already paid for itself.
AJ has had a frustrating day. He got to get all dressed up in his basketball uniform this morning, but he didn’t get to play — it was picture day. He couldn’t spend much time outside because whatever he had earlier this week left him with an ear infection and the cold was making it worse. And worst of all, he had been looking forward for a couple of weeks to the local gym’s “Drop and Date” night, where he was going to get to have the run of the gym with his friend D and whoever else showed up. But not enough kids signed up for the event and it was cancelled. AJ has been moping all afternoon. I’ve been moping a little bit too, actually. I was looking forward to a date with Mr. Spy.
In between bouts of moping, though, AJ read several books (Jenny and the Cat Club, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, A Wrinkle in Time), helped me do a 550 piece puzzle with a picture from A Charlie Brown Christmas, drew Christmas pictures for his cousins, and sat in rapt contemplation of the Christmas tree while Mr. Spy and I shoveled the driveway.
After dinner, we all piled onto the sofa under a blanket and watched A Charlie Brown Christmas. I do frequently miss younger versions of AJ, especially at this time of year, when I seem to remember all Christmases past. But I love that he’s old enough now that there are things we all like to do together. Even if those things largely involve snuggling on the sofa and watching TV while the snow falls and falls and falls.

Snowbound! In desperation one year, with four whiney kids stuck in the house,my mom sat us all down at the kitchen table and made us collaborate on an essay about what we would do if we really were snowbound. I got sent to my room because my contribution was “cook and eat Alan” (my little brother). Everyone’s a critic.

I remember being snowbound as a kid, and my mother took us over to a neighbor’s house where the neightbor had fixed up a make-your-own-taco dinner. So we got to chop and play with taco fixin’s. eh, it was something. I hope that the taco meat wasn’t someone’s younger brother…..

I hope that you get a respite soon. We keep being threatened with snow and it keeps being rain.
