Yesterday was Mr. Spy’s birthday. AJ was really excited about his present this year. You see, Mr. Spy has taken up a new hobby: he’s started painting. And not useful things like the deck or the house or that place by the garage door where the paint always flakes off after it rains really hard. He’s making art. His goal is to work up to a large painting that we can use to replace the enormous map of the United States that hangs on one wall of our living room.

Mr. Spy has set up shop at the workbench that came with our garage that also serves as the Cub Scout Project table, the place where I try not to saw my fingers in half and the potting bench. He’s been working out there for at least a month. AJ has been very fascinated with his progress and with all the paintings that are now decorating the garage. So for Mr. Spy’s birthday, we paid a visit to an art supply store and picked up a small table easel, and some more paints and brushes and canvasses. AJ may be camping out in the garage after school to watch Mr. Spy paint.

Because of Mr. Spy’s birthday, I missed THE meeting of our school board’s finance committee, the one where they announced their recommendation for the school closure next year. The rumors have been ramping up for the last week. Apparently it was quite a meeting and I’m still trying to find someone who was there to find out exactly what happened. The 15-person subcommittee investigating the possibilities recommended the other K-4 school, not AJ’s. But discussion was heated and the meeting apparently ended with the Board rejected the proposal and sent them back to the drawing board. I’ve heard all kinds of things, but I haven’t heard from anyone who was actually there to the bitter end, so I’m not sure why the proposal was sent back. Everything else I’ve read makes a pretty clear case for that school being the best choice. The continued limbo is stressful to all, especially, I’m sure, to those working at or attending the school recommended for closure. So we’re not out of the woods yet, but I’m cautiously optimistic that AJ’s school will still be open next year. The next question will be, will AJ still be attending that school? I can tell this is going to be a long process. I’m trying to be very zen about it. But it’s going to take a lot of deep cleansing breaths to get us through.

Sounds like a great project for Mr Spy–will you post a photo when he’s done?

I am reminded of a Malcolm in the Middle episode where Hal took up painting. I hope Mr. Spy has better success. A happy belated birthday to him.

Thanks for the baby congrats! I’m totally looking forward to the freakishly graphic, alien-like kicks. 🙂
