Road trip

August 16, 2010

Yesterday we decided to take a spontaneous 24-hour vacation. As usual, we didn’t know where to go. So I got on facebook and asked people for their favorite places. And Siren made an excellent case for Milwaukee. So we threw some stuff in a bag, packed some lunches, and hit the road.

Up until now, everything I knew about Milwaukee was this

and this

and a little bit of this

But now I also know about this

and this

and this

and this

From our house, Milwaukee is a beautiful drive through farms and rolling hills, so we weren’t even all stressed out when we got there.

We ate cheaply, but well. Our favorite place, though, was more about atmosphere than food– a restaurant disguised as an alley-side export business where you enter through a bookshelf that’s really a door and where all the staff call you agents. And for dessert, we had frozen custard, of course, at a stand by the beach and across from bluff-top mansions. And being in Wisconsin, most of our food involved a lot of this

We stayed a block from here in a tiny, perfect suite we got for a song where AJ got his own room.

After a stop at the lovely Milwaukee Zoo, we got on the beautiful farm roads that take us home, stopping for lunch at a barn that was enjoying the day as much as we were.

Very cool! That looks like a lot of fun. I love day trips.

I think I might have eaten at that restaurant when I was in Milwaukee! Did the french fries by chance have very sharp zig zags?

Alas, we didn’t order the French fries — my son prefers chips. But here’s a site with more pictures and a pretty good description:

Leather Tuscadero just turned 60 this year. Sigh…
