A Long Time Coming

November 19, 2010

Were there a few extra hours or maybe days in the week this week? Because I was looking at the list of things I’ve accomplished and I’m really not sure how I managed to fit it all in. Not only did I get an almost incomprehensible amount of academic work done this week, but I planned and shopped for Thanksgiving, did loads of laundry, cooking and dishes, worked out every day but today (I’m still hoping to fit it in), arranged 3 pieces for my students, taught violin to ten kids, practiced piano and violin daily, and outlined an idea for a novel. And somehow I still had time for Facebook, blogging, novel-reading, crossword puzzling and TV-watching.

You see what I mean? It can’t possibly have been an ordinary week. But I haven’t accomplished everything. The less said about the cleanliness of my house, the better.

I credit some of my superhuman energy this week to the perfect playlist, which is a combination of things I’ve posted about here before and (I’m somewhat embarrassed to say) most of the Veronica Mars soundtrack CD. I put the mix together before my drive to Indy. It’s very upbeat — a good workout mix. But I’ve been playing it so much that I’m finding it elicits a bit of a Pavlovian response to work. This is extremely useful. I have a feeling my family will be sick of this CD by June. So far, though, AJ is particularly enamored with it. You haven’t lived until you’ve heard a 9-year-old boy belting “One Way or Another” when he thinks no one is listening.

In case anyone’s interested, here’s the list:

Elvis Costello: Veronica

I have done very few of the things you’ve done this week (I’m beginning to wonder if you are actually human) but perhaps if I had a copy of this CD, I, too, might be able to do some things, too. I would like to try the experiment and see if it works.

That could be arranged. I owe Cranky some CDs too. It’s actually about a CD and a half. I’ll what I can do.
